MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the BTCA Health Committee is to improve and maintain the health of the Bull Terrier.   In order to keep the Bull Terrier an active and sound companion, the health of the breed as a whole is critical to safeguard.

The Health Committee shall work to identify potential hereditary problems in the breed, to assess disease propensity in the breed, and to educate breeders and owners in understanding screening and treatment modalities for identified or potential health problems.

The Health Committee shall work to provide education on health matters to all Bull Terrier owners and shall keep abreast of new developments in the field of canine veterinary medicine and canine genetics affecting Bull Terriers.

The Health Committee shall work to develop a health advancement program in order to support breeders and owner alike with health programs, information and services of the highest caliber.

GOALS

Foster a positive environment within the BTCA regarding health issues in Bull Terriers.

Foster the concept that sound health is regarded as yet another breed virtue and should be considered as important as conformation virtues when planning a mating.

Provide a program of formal recognition of health achievements at the club level in order to support the efforts made locally by dogs, breeders and owners.

Foster open discussion of health issues through educational seminars and discussion groups on specialty weekends.

Facilitate the dissemination of health information via BARKS, the RECORD, the BTCA website and other means as appropriate.

Focus the energies and resources of the BTCA on those health issues that are of greatest concern to members as defined by annual health surveys.

Support and promote BTCA health projects, health surveys and the Bull Terrier Health Database.

Support and promote the fundraising efforts of the BTCA Health Committee and contributions to the AKC CHF BTCA Donor Advised Fund.

Support and promote the key goals of the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

Cooperate and combine resources with other parent clubs sharing similar health concerns.
